Chandeliers

An Introduction To Chandeliers

When it comes to light fixtures, few, if any, are more iconic and can match the sheer elegance of a chandelier. Before we dive into the types, sizing, and placement of chandeliers, let’s take some time to talk about what a chandelier is.

Simply put, chandeliers are light fixtures that hang from the ceiling, often through the use of a downrod. In that sense, they share many similarities to pendant. Chandeliers differ from pendants in the fact that they have multiple lighting sources that are connected via a branched frame. Pendants on the other hand, usually have just one light source.

When thinking of chandeliers, what most often comes to mind is a traditional fixture with beads and crystals that hang from nearly every part of the fixture. However, modern trends in chandelier design often turn that image on its head, while still delivering the awe-inspiring results we’ve come to expect from chandeliers.

While chandeliers are most commonly seen in a dining room, the truth is they can be effectively used in nearly any room in your home or office, depending upon the size of the room and the fixture itself.

Popular Types Of Chandeliers

Traditional-style chandeliers are a re-creation of historic Victorian-era chandeliers which often functioned as the primary source of light. While the chandeliers of old which were designed to hold actual candles, these chandeliers can hold anywhere from just a few to a few dozen individual electric candles. Traditional chandeliers go great near staircases, in your foyer or in a place where the light can reflect off mirrors and glass doors.

Closely related to the traditional chandelier, crystal chandeliers bring a classic, vintage, and dramatic look to any residential or commercial space. While these ornate pieces used to be a sign of wealth and the upper-class, modern technological innovations have made many of these beautiful fixtures fall right into your lighting budget. Crystal chandeliers come in a variety of shapes, styles, and sizes and often feature multiple-tiered levels.

Named after the famed glass art form developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, when we talk about Tiffany chandeliers, we are referring to glass chandeliers that are created using small, colorful pieces of glass that are soldered together to create intricate, multi-colored, repeatable patterns. Whether you choose a classic or more contemporary design, these timeless showpieces will light up your home for generations to come.

Drum chandeliers are circular in shape and have their light fully encased inside a drum-like disc typically come with paper, plastic, or cloth shades. These fixtures are usually placed in wide-open spaces like restaurants or commercial entryways. However, they also go great in larger living rooms or kitchens. Pair these chandeliers with a dimmer for an especially powerful effect.

Starburst chandeliers have an unmistakable look and feel. These chandeliers have a star-like appearance and often have globes or shooting spikes with a central lighting source as well as ones that are placed on the end points. Not only do they make great conversation starters, they’re also extremely versatile and can work well in offices, living spaces, and entryways.

Globe or orb chandeliers are pleasantly shaped and give an unmistakable warm glow that is simply a sight to behold. The globes are usually crafted from glass, paper, wood, metal mesh, or some type of fabric. These stunning pieces can find a home in nearly every single room of your home or office. For bigger rooms we often recommend creating a group of these fixtures suspended at varying heights.

How To Find The Right-Sized Chandelier

Finding the perfect chandelier for your space is not just a matter of personal preference, as important as that is, it’s also a matter of finding something that’s the correct size for the room. If you install a chandelier that’s either too large or too small, the rest of the room will look awkward in comparison.

The good news is that there are useful measurement guidelines to help you determine the width, height, and hanging (or chain) length of your chandelier:

Determining The Width Of Your Chandelier

In order to find out the right width for your chandelier, the first thing you’ll need to do is take the length and width measurements of your room. From there, you add them up and then convert the sum into inches. This means if you have a room that’s 12 feet by 24 feet, you’ll want a chandelier that’s 36 inches in diameter.

However, you may also want to determine the width of your chandelier based on the size of the table below it. In this case, you should find a chandelier that’s no bigger than two-thirds the width of the table.

Determining The Height Of Your Chandelier

The first step to determining the right height for your chandelier is measuring your ceiling’s height from the floor at the site of installation. For every foot of ceiling height, you’ll want two and a half to three inches of chandelier height in inches. This means a 10-foot ceiling would have a 25-30 inch chandelier.

Keep in mind that these guidelines are for rooms that are proportionally sized. If you have a long and wide room with a short ceiling or vice versa, you might want to talk to a lighting professional for more specific measurements

Determining The Chain Length Of Your Chandelier

Generally speaking, your chandelier should hang 30 to 36 inches above the table. The good news is chains can be extended or shortened as needed, so don’t feel too stressed out if you get it wrong on the first go.

While these helpful guidelines can point you in the right direction, it never hurts to have a second opinion from an expert. After all, every space is different, and design guidelines are never hard and fast rules that should never be broken

If you still have concerns about finding a correctly sized chandelier(s), our trained and experienced lighting consultants are here to answer and questions and help you pick the right fixture.
